"Sail the Streets, Share the Joy"
Founded in 2022, Krewe de Corsairs had one goal in mind, to give the Central Louisiana citizens a glimpse and experience of the traditional Mardi Gras that has made Louisiana the destination for so many. The krewe's pirate-inspired theme nods to Louisiana's storied past along the waterways like the Red River, while keeping the tone light-hearted and inclusive - less plunder, more about sharing the treasure of Mardi Gras with all. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Gulf of America and Louisiana's coast were hotspots for privateering. Figures like Jean Lafitte, a legendary privateer-turned-pirate, operated out of Barataria Bay near New Orleans. Lafitte and his men were hired by various governments to harass Spanish ships, much like the corsairs worked under letters of marque in the Mediterranean.
Community outreach is a cornerstone for any Mardi Gras krewe, but for a new krewe like the Krewe de Corsairs in Alexandria, Louisiana, it's especially vital. In a city like Alexandria--where Mardi Gras traditions exist but don't dominate the cultural landscape as they do in New Orleans or Lafayette--outreach can make or break the krewe's ability to take root, grow, and become a cherished local institution.
